I researched Clorox cleaning wipes and Windex spray glass cleaner, products we use at home on a daily basis. Despite all the chemicals that compose these products, OSHA does not consider any of them to be "hazardous" at a reportable level. When absorbed, they are known to cause "slight irritation" to the skin, respiratory tract and or GI tract, but nothing chronic or lethal. I was surprised to find out the "minimal" toxicity rating of Clorox and Windex. In order to make an informed decision on purchases, it is important to do personal research on every chemical or ingredient that composes a product. By law, it is the responsibility of manufacturers to list the chemicals and ingredients of products and from there it is the responsibility of public health leaders to implement public health education and safety on the use of these products.
Hi Allyssa,
ReplyDeleteOther than the known risks for eye and skin irritation from using this bleach product, it is quite surprising to see the minimal risks for this product overall.
Thanks for your post! I agree that it is the responsibility of manufacturers to list the chemicals and ingredients of products, and it is then the responsibility of public health leaders to teach the public to make better decisions when purchasing products for their safety.
